Dalitsch Pond
Path Grand Opening and Bridge Dedication
Last Wednesday, May 2, the walking path and pedestrian bridges were officially open to the public.

Left to right. John Sentell, President Lake Forest Open Lands, Larry Meilbeck, President of Conway Park Business Owners Assoc., Kent Novit First Ward Alderman-Lake Forest, Ken Magnus, Lake Forest - City Engineer, ret. Ramesh Kanapareddy, City Engineer.
Located just west of the City's Municipal Services Center, the Dalitsch Pond serves as a focal point for nature lovers and walkers who wish to enjoy the ecological beauty and wildlife surrounding a high-quality wetland. In order to promote these wetlands enhancements for the enjoyment of Lake Forest and Lake County residents, a half-mile wood chip path surrounds the pond and area, with the wooden Dalitsch Pedestrian Bridge constructed to complete the nature walk.
The bridge was donated to The City of Lake Forest by the Conway Park Office Association. The entire Dalitsch property is a 14-acre parcel owned by The City of Lake Forest in addition to a 19-acre site owned by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. The 3.62-acre Dalitsch Pond is located on the property and was created in the 1960s as a borrow pit. Today, the pond ultimately discharges a less turbid stormwater into a ditch located at the northeast end of the pond. This ditch conveys stormwater into the high quality wetlands located at the Middlefork Savanna.
The City of Lake Forest, in collaboration with Lake County Forest Preserve District and the Lake Forest Open Lands Association, undertook the Dalitsch Pond Wetlands Enhancement project. The purpose of the project was to improve the water quality entering the Middlefork Savanna from the Dalitsch property along with removing pollutants from settling, attenuation and vegetative filtration. Wetland plants within the pond will work to consume excess nutrients within the basin, further improving the water quality leaving the Dalitsch site. The meandering route of the stormwater path was designed to mimic a natural wetland for water quality benefits and for creating the longest route possible to maximize filtration and absorption of pollutants.

Conway Park Installs Pedestrian Crosswalk Signals
On February 25 &26, we installed pedestrian crosswalk signals at 3 locations in Conway Park, consisting of high-visibility fluorescent yellow-green crosswalk warning signs, along with a downward facing arrow positioned close to the crosswalk markings.

For as much benefit as these new crosswalks bring to the employees of the businesses in the Park, they have also brought some confusion and concern.
It is important that both Motorists; and Pedestrians alike; understand their responsibilities in regard to crosswalks:
- In July 2010, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a state law requiring vehicles to make a full stop if a pedestrian is waiting to cross, or is in the process of crossing, at a non-controlled (no traffic lights) crosswalk.
- High-visibility flashing strobe lights, fluorescent yellow-green crosswalk warning signs, along with downward facing arrows positioned close to the crosswalk markings, have all been installed in Conway Park to warn drivers of the presence of 3 newly installed crosswalks in the Park.
- Pedestrians are responsible for pushing the button to activate the strobe lights which are the best warning to remind motorists to be aware of pedestrians in the crosswalk. PEDESTRIANS MUST USE THE PUSH TO WALK BUTTONS!!!
- Drivers in Illinois can be fined up to $250 for each crosswalk violation.
The Illinois Department of Transportation gives these guidelines to Pedestrians:
- do not dart into traffic
- look left, then right, and then left again
- only cross in marked crosswalks
- make eye contact with the driver

Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Developing a Bicycle Master Plan
The City of Lake Forest, in partnership with the Village of Lake Bluff, is developing a Bicycle Master Plan. This initiative is based on input received at recent Ward meetings and in an effort to pro-actively identify safe bike routes within and through the community. Beginning on Monday, January 30, 2012 and over the next 6 months, a series of public workshops will be held to effectively engage residents, commuters and recreational riders in the development of the Master Plan and evaluate existing bike facilities.
Stay informed of upcoming public workshops and events by visiting the City’s website:
